Livesubs are the output from a computer overlaying subtitles over raw R2 DVDs, generated live without re-encoding video files. The subtitle scripts are either written from scratch or transcribed subs from digisubs. Livesubs were introduced to the club by Dylan Hall in 2001 with Revolutionary Girl Utena - Adolescence of Utena, and the first series shown with livesubs was His_and_Her_Circumstances, with scripts being ripped from the digisubs by Nur Monson, Ben Leinweber and Dylan Hall.

The ability to rip subtitles from digisubs was simplified by Nur Monson with his altered VirtualDub program, which he called VirtualSub. With VirtualSub allows you to locate the begining and end of a subtitle and type it in all in the same program. It outputs scripts in SSA format.

This process was introduced to help those in the club not fluent in Japanese understand the subtitle-lacking R2s some members collected, without the need to record new DVDs or VHS tapes with subtitles included. It has allowed the club make use of the more wealthy members' collections, as well as side-step some members' concerns about the legitimacy of digisubs while still allowing the club to show anime not yet released in America.

Duck is just that--an ordinary duck. But one day, she gains the ability to transform into Princess Tutu to gather the shattered pieces of prince Mytho's heart and fight against the monster raven who broke it.

This is a downright adorable show...and it stays that way, even though it starts to get dark towards the end. The characters are almost all likeable (except for a few minor ones) and the story is beautiful.
*I had never heard so many males excited about ballet before. It's really cute to hear all the guys (just the guys mind you) gasp and squeal, "PRINCESS TUTU!" when I put the disc in. Of course, the girls are just as excited. I'm very happy we decided to show this wonderful show.
Annaliese Christman

*Pure delight! The visual almost surreal visual style takes me back to the days of Revolutionary Girl Utena. The main character is sterotypically not the brightest bulb, but not to the point of being annoying. This magical girl anime has an excelent symbolic battles which fits the ballet theme of the show perfectly. On top of this, plot twists abound to keep you wanting more!
Yeah, actually WMF is one of the blacklisted types because it can contain arbitrary code that executes on some systems.
Also it's composed of windows 3.x API calls, so it's not the best format to use in general. SVG would be much better if we could figure out how to get things into that.
Hey Mike, I found a program that should be able to import .ai files and .ps and maybe even .eps files and then convert them to .svg. The program is multi-platform, but it looks like that several import features are missing from the windows version. Can you download the Linux version and see if you can indeed import .ai files? If so we should be set!
I've debated that and still am not sure. Perhaps it makes more sense to drop 'Former Officers' and just move everyone into 'Officers'? We don't distinguish between current and former holders of any particular position (partly since a category that can only ever have one member would be silly).
While I agree with you on :category:officers, I think a :category:former members or :category:MNA Alumni are warrented. At the very least, if not that, we should have a box writen at the top of the user page giving member status or something.

Hey Mike, I don't have much time right now, so no morning edits. I'm thinking however that we have put up almost enough content to open it up to the public. One thing we need is a sample anime description/review page (complete with a snapshot or two, and if avalible boxart, a link to its ANN or AoDVD or other review, and a member review (perhaps biased for and against the show). If we can get Nik or Nur to help out here, I'd do a point-counterpoint on Noir or Haibane.

The second thing we need is a story recorded in an aural voice, if that makes any sense. First person, and crazy as possible. Nik and Nur would help out great here.

The third thing we need to do is clean up the front page.

I think if we get these three things done, we can open it up to everyone!
I've debated that and still am not sure. Perhaps it makes more sense to drop 'Former Officers' and just move everyone into 'Officers'? We don't distinguish between current and former holders of any particular position (partly since a category that can only ever have one member would be silly).
I'm a third year (as of spring quarter 2006) computer science major from southern California (though I was born in New Mexico and moved about quite a bit due to the vagaries of an Air Force life). I first started coming to Minna in fall of 2003, my first year at Poly. I didn't run for office for my second year, but I ended up being secretary for half of the 2004-2005 year anyway. After that, I ran for 2005-2006 vice president but was beaten by Erin, then ran for secretary and won. The next year, I ran for 2006-2007 vice president and won.

My favorite anime (currently) is a tie between Blood+ and Twelve Kingdoms, and I really desperately want the Blood+ OST and Twelve Kingdoms translated novels (neither of which exist yet, apparently). My favorite manga is Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle, though I also have soft spots for FAKE, One Piece, and Wild Adapter. I play World of Warcraft and my favorite console game is Final Fantasy VII. I also roleplay excessively and read an awful lot of fanfiction. I'm mildly proficient in reading and writing Japanese, but I'm pretty much only on par with a retarded kindergartener.
I have to say I pegged you for officer material within two months of meeting you, and was really dissapointed when you didn't run. <tr><td>

Jenn is highly dedicated to the club in addition to being highly addicted to her manga and anime.

I have to say I pegged you for officer material within two months of meeting you, and was really dissapointed when you didn't run. While I highly respect David Bathe, it was the right decision for him to leave, and I'm glad that you stepped up to the responsibility of Secretary that year!
Yeah, actually WMF is one of the blacklisted types because it can contain arbitrary code that executes on some systems.
Also it's composed of windows 3.x API calls, so it's not the best format to use in general. SVG would be much better if we could figure out how to get things into that.
--MikeWhipp 17:19, 23 April 2006 (PDT)

Hey Mike, I found a program that should be able to import .ai files and .ps and maybe even .eps files and then convert them to .svg. The program is multi-platform, but it looks like that several import features are missing from the windows version. Can you download the Linux version and see if you can indeed import .ai files? If so we should be set!
I tweaked the timezone settings while I was at it, everything should be in Pacific Time right now (we're a California club after all, even if our servers are in Texas).
Hey Mike, look at the discussion @ :Image:MNA_Logo_Wiki.gif.
Also, can you edit the LocalSettings.php file line:

$wgFileExtensions = array( 'png', 'gif', 'jpg', 'jpeg', 'ogg' );

So that it will include
* ".ai" - Adobe Illustrator
* ".FH8" - Freehand 8
* ".wmf" - Windows Meta File (a simple pathbased image format, good for clipart)
* ".swf" - I've got the logos in Flash format too!

History of the T-Shirts
The first T-shirt we still have record of was designed and printed by Jann Fabrin in 1995. Yang, a member of PolyInk as well, was a gifted artist, and drew the "Knight of Gold" T-Shirt, seperations and all. These seperations are still in the posession of Minna no Anime officers. The design was taken directly from a promotional immage for Five Star Stories. The next year Jann started the t-shirt contest, and also instituted the rule that there would be no copyrighted images allowed.

Former presidents Ron Neal and Josh Holmstrom have mentioned that while there were no shirts for the 1994-1995 year, there were shirts before this. If anyone still has one of these, or of any other designs we are missing, we would LOVE to see pictures!
T-Shirt Contest
Every year Minna no Anime holds a T-Shirt contest and its members vote on the various designs that are submitted. Usually the contest is held sometime in late Winter Quarter or early Spring Quarter in hopes that the T-Shirts may be printed before Open House. This way we can all proudly wear and show our new shiny T-Shirts off to all the potential new members!

T-shirt Contest Rules
Taken from http://www.minnanoanime.org/tshirt.html.

* You get a MAX of four (4) colors. You can obviously use less, but the max is four.
* Make your design with a shirt color in mind. Think of it as a free fifth color. try not to make your design on white paper unless you plan on having it on a white shirt. The shirt colors you have to choose from can be found at this page. You can just turn in a design on white paper and choose a different color for the shirt, if you want. It just makes voting easier if everyone has a good idea of how it will look on the shirt.
*Ok, you don't need color seperations unless your design is chosen. If your design is chosen, you will then have two weeks to get your seperations done for us. For that they need to be finished on a computer, in a relatively high resolution. if you can do it in a vector format that would be ideal, but not required.
*The designs are due, and will be voted on by the members, durring our meeting on the 15th of January (2005). This is the second weekend (and meeting) of Winter quarter. Editors note: This date changes every year.
*Your design must include some kind of indicator that this is for Minna no Anime. You can use just the "Minna" kanji, "Minna no Anime" in Japanese or Romanji or some combination of them. That shouldn't be too hard.

Usually the contest is held sometime in late Winter Quarter or early Spring Quarter in hopes that the T-Shirts may be printed before Open House. This way we can all proudly wear and show our new shiny T-Shirts off to all the potential new members!
*Your design must include some kind of indicator that this is for Minna no Anime. You can use just the "Minna" kanji, "Minna no Anime" in Japanese or Romanji or some combination of them. That shouldn't be too hard.

Dr. Andrew Morris is an Associate Professor in the History Department of California Polytechnic State University. He teaches all aspects of East Asian History, but specializes in the early 20th centery of China and Taiwan, and is especially interested in the sports and physical activities of that time period. Fluent in Chinese, one of his favorite methods of research is newspaper archives. He has writen many published works including books, the details of which can be found at his web sit .
What Others Say
Dr. Morris' speaks with a slightly small voice, but the passion can be seen in his eyes. He has a good sense of humor (see his website portrait) and a story telling style that facinates you through class.

East Asian studies also go hand in hand with anime. Many stories, such as Rurouni Kenshin, are set in a historical period. Knowing more about these periods makes the anime all the more interesting.

In one history class, he was talking about how Samurai Warriors turned the religion Zen Buddhism into rutuals for battles. He then made the offhand remark how unfortunate that was. I asked him "How can you say that as a history proffessor? Aren't you supposed to be impartial?"

His reply: "I don't pretend to be unbiased. I am human, and humans are biased by nature."

The truth of these words struck me, and I'll not forget them.

I highly reccommend taking any and all classes you can with him. Heck, you've gotta take a history credit sometime, right?
Unlike most Wikis, we encourage you to edit your own entry. Please obey the following simple rules.
* Where possible, keep your contributions in their own section and in the first person.
* Editing objective third person sections to correct inaccurate biographical information is allowed. Use your better judgement.
* Editing subjective, attributed third person sections is discouraged. If you feel you must do this, please defend your actions in your article's discussion page, and be aware your change may be reverted by the moderators.
Be Biased, But Be Fair
Cal Poly East Asian History Proffessor Dr. Andrew Morris once said, "I don't pretend to be unbiased.
Here you don't need to hide your bias, but let's try to be biased fairly instead of fairly biased.

<references/>

Being Fair
* Make your statements of oppinion in the appropriate section, listed below.
* No flame wars here. Make your biased statements of oppinion without being inflamitory. Keep swear words to a minimum.
* A lie is not a bias, it's just a lie.
* Always write your signature when you make a statement of oppinion.
* If you can't be fair, you get silenced. Moderators exist for a reason.

Sections for your statement of oppinion
* For an anime show, put your oppion in a "Member Review" section
* For an event, put your oppinion in a "Member Feedback" section
* For another person, put your oppinion in a "What Others Say" section
* Personal stories have bias by nature. Just remember to write your signature to the story.
Uploading Images
Feel free to upload images, with the following caveats:
* Keep the image size below 640x480 and the file size under 150KB as much as possible.
* Space is limited, so pick one or two significant images per topic. Galleries belong elsewhere.

History of the T-Shirts
The first T-shirt we still have record of was designed and printed by Jann in 1995.

History of the Logo
This is the Minna no Anime club logo. Unfortunatly as of right now, the orriginal creator remains unknown. But this logo has been used from at least 1995 when the first T-shirt design came out, and has been used as a breast logo on all t-shirts except for the 2005-2006 T-Shirt.

In 1999, Ben Leinweber created the MNA logo file that was used on all the T-Shirts from 1999 to 2002. Apparently he didn't copy the files to the officers after taking off to Japan the next year, and Nur Monson had to rebuild the file. At that time, the bottom text which reads "Cal Poly Anime Club" was flipped around (probably on accident) so that the bottom of the text was facing inwards. Before that it was previously facing outwords.

A proper format of the file again seems to have been lost and Ben remade the file in April of 2006. When he did so, he decided to keep the change that Nur made to the logo. He also updated the font of the logo to look more like proper writing. (This has yet to get approoval by the current officers).

Download the files
The files were orriginally made in FreeHand 8, but they have been exported to various file formats for whatever use you may have.

Minna no Anime club T-shirts show you are a proud member of this club!

History of the T-Shirts
The first T-shirt we still have record of was designed and printed by Jann in 1995.

Past T-Shirts
Unfortunatly a few T-shirts have been lost to antiquity. But take a look at the ones we do have. Click on the picture to get a better look.

Hey Mike, look at the discussion @ :Image:MNA_Logo_Wiki.gif.
Also, can you edit the LocalSettings.php file line:

$wgFileExtensions = array( 'png', 'gif', 'jpg', 'jpeg', 'ogg' );

So that it will include
* ".FH8" - Freehand 8
* ".wmf" - Windows Meta File (a simple pathbased image format, good for clipart)

Alright, Ben. Done. Just be careful and don't take ALL our webspace just with MNA logos. I only gave this domain 250M, and that includes the main library site as well.

What I say
Hello everybody! I've been involved in the Minna no Anime club since the very beginning of my Freshman year in 1998. I remember the first time I went to the club and was greeted by Craig Kleen outside of the silo, as we had been kicked out into one of the business rooms that week. I was hooked instantly and never missed a meeting after that!

Pre-club
I got into anime rather late in my life when one of my high school friends rented Ghost in the Shell and Riding Bean with me. Riding Bean was freaking weird, but GiTS totally blew me away. The next anime I saw after that was the Ranma 1/2 series which I absolutely fell in love with, and rented all of the tapes I could from my local comic shop.

First year in club
My first year was a blast, and I couldn't get enough! I lived in Tenaya Hall along with Tim Mok, Chris Perlus, Cliff Rowley, and Noel Priecs (sp?). After a quick dinner at the Outhouse, we'd usually walk down together to the silo, our haven of anime. First year we had some pretty bitchin' stuff showing. Check it out!

I remember spending time with my gang in Tenaya, copying all of the Rurouni Kenshin fansubs for 5 people, and watching the End of Evangelion movie in those small rooms as soon as a fansub came in! (One of the few times I watched stuff out of club before it was shown in club)

We were bribed into helping at Open House in 1999 with the promise of free copies of fansubs that were in the club library. I had a lot of fun there in spite of myself.

Treasurer in 1999-2000
For the 1999 elections, the club had a bit of a problem: no one wanted to do it! Mitch Losh and Craig Kleen ran against each other for president, and when Mitch took it, Craig ran unopposed for VP. Next came the treasurer position. No one readily volunteered for the position. I was hesitant as it was still only my first year, and I knew very little about running the club. But I had great fun at Open House that year, so I thought I'd give it a shot, and raised my hand.

My first duty started instantly as I had to remake the MNA Logo for the T-shirts that hadn't been printed yet. I had studied a lot of Graphics in High School, so I picked up a copy of FreeHand 8.0 from the Campus bookstore for the project. The T-shirts turned out great!

For the next three years, club was my life, and I spent every minute I could spare making plans for it. Mitch was in Japan for the first quarter, so and it was the first and only time Craig ran for a position, so we learned the ropes together (though Craig was a long time member, so he pretty much knew what he was doing).

President in 2000-2001
All of the old officers graduated the next year, and nobody but me was interested in taking the presidency of the club. Lucky me! Along with my new Vice President Dylan Hall and the rest of the staff that year, we put together a fine schedule that year.

I met Mark Salcido, an officer for the Atascadero Japanese Animation Society, at AX2K through Lee Bourgeois. We talked about doing a joint Halloween party together that year. With everyone's help we created the first annual MNA AJAS Halloween party. Unfortunately AJAS shrunk and all but disappeared so now it's just the Minna no Anime Halloween Party.

I also had all of the tapes that Viz had released up to that point of Maison Ikkoku. Though it had been shown previously in club, that was before I got there. So I had to see it for myself on the big screen! At that time the official starting time was 6:00, so we called it Before Hours and I showed MI in the first slot and Dylan started his Fansub o' the week in the second.

President in 2001-2002
Dylan and I ran against each other in a friendly race, and I believe that I won by only one or two votes that year. If I hadn't won, I would have gone for the newly created Librarian position. I had a couple of visions for it, but I couldn't enact them in the role of president. I just didn't have the time.

Anime was gaining popularity and digisubs had yet to make a big debut at the time, so our club grew to a height of more than 50 members at that time. All of my best friends were in the club and we could geek it up all night! Of course the posters that we received from ADV that we gave out with membership probably helped a lot too! ;)

I was not at all happy with the crappy "noise maker" system that Mark had come up with for trivia the previous year, so I developed the Trivia Buzzer System that we used the first time this year. Except for a few bugs here and there it worked fine. Improvements would follow each year for the next 4 years.

The previous summer I bought and received the Maison Ikkoku Box Set from TokyoPop, which was in the business of importing at that time. Due to some strong opposition from several officers to put it in the normal schedule (we already had which shows we were going to put in planned), I decide to create Maison Ikkoku Sunday Dinner Theater. We showed 6 episodes of MI livesubbed every other Sunday. I know there's a picture of the attendees around. I'll see if I can dig it out.

Ben in Japan 2002-2003
I would have been perfectly happy as a clam running as an officer until I graduated except for that I decided I liked all of this Japanese stuff to much to stay in the US forever. A 9 month home stay and studying under some seriously excellent proffessors at Waseda university filled my desired for knowledge. Because I was having too much fun with Japanese itself, I didn't really watch too much anime this year. But that didn't stop me from coming to club the next year.

Member in 2003-2004
My last year at Cal Poly was spent as a simple member. I'll write more about this later.

What others say
<pre>
Ah Ben, our agent in Japan. He was pres for 2000, and 2k1 (and treasurer
before that I believe). Ben was pres during the time club began to "evolve"
into what I consider it's greatest period. Ben was always friendly and
willing to take all the jokes with a grain of salt (He certainly withstood
plenty of verbal and physical abuse).

Notable achievements: Programmed the buzzer and quiz program we use for
trivia during Halloween (except this year's), first documented case of MNA
cross-play at Halloween (Sailor Ben), managed to convince Cal Poly media
services to give us access to the booth in order to gain club direct control
of the projector, contributed scritps for live-subbing, Maison dinner theater
on Sundays.

How do you spot him: It used to be really easy, look for the white guy with
glasses, beard, and long hair. He has since chopped off the mop, but he
still got the beard and glasses, last I checked.

He's currently teaching english in Japan.
</pre>

--Nik Kamachi, email to MNAMembers, 23 Dec 2005

Pumpkins
My favorite part of Halloween was the pumpkin carving contest. I learned how to use the Pumpkin Masters Carving kit with my parents a long long time ago, and my skills in Graphic Communications helped a lot here. The first Halloween I made a picture of Rishu from Mammotte Shugogetten. Man she was cute.

In 2003 I made these pumpkins:

For the record, I designed Rakka, but Mike Whipped did all the messy carving work for me. Nadia is definitely my most favorite pumpkin I have ever done!

Later on I'm thinking of writing a pumpkin making guide for everyone! :)

The Atascadero Japanese Animation Society (or AJAS) was a club not associated with any other organization that was held in the Atascadero Library on Saturdays. According to a resume found in Google Cache, Robyn Anderson founded the club in 1996, and was a member until 2001. While Minna no Anime focuses mostly on Anime, AJAS members used to get together for gamming sessions and such during their meetings. As both clubs held their meetings at roughly the same time, very few people actually attended both clubs.

In 2000, with Mark Salcido as the diplomat from AJAS, Minna no Anime and AJAS held the very first annual joint Halloween Party. AJAS members showed up for several years after that, though many members were unaware of this.

Now AJAS is apparently a defunct group. Their web page no longer exists on the web any more.

I met Mark Salcido, an officer for the Attascadero Japanese Anime Society, at AX2K through Lee Bourgeois.

<pre>

I was hesitent as it was still only my first year, and I knew very little about running the club.

I met Mark Salcido, an officer for the Attascadero Japanese Anime Scociety, at AX2K through Lee Bourgeois. We talked about doing a joint Halloween party together that year. With everyone's help we created the first anual MNA AJAS Halloween party. Unfortunatly AJAS shrunk and all but dissapeared so now it's just the Minna no Anime Halloween Party.

Of course the posters that we recieved from ADV that we gave out with membership probably helpped a lot too! ;)

I was not at all happy with the crappy "noise maker" system that Mark had come up with for trivia the previous year, so I developed the Trivia Buzzer System that we used the first time this year. Except for a few bugs here and there it worked fine. Improovements would follow each year for the next 4 years.

The previous summer I bought and recieved the Maison Ikkoku Box Set from TokyoPop, which was in the business of importing at that time. Due to some strong opposition from several officers to put it in the normal schedule (we already had which shows were were going to put in planned), I decide to create Maison Ikkoku Sunday Dinner Theater. We showed 6 episodes of MI livesubbed every other Sunday. I know there's a picture of the attendees around. I'll see if I can dig it out.

Ben in Japan 2002-2003
I would have been prefectly happy as a clam running as an officer until I graduated except for that I decided I liked all of this Japanese stuff to much to stay in the US forever. A 9 month homestay and studying under some seriously excelent proffessors at Waseda university filled my desired for knowledge. Because I was having too much fun with Japanese itself, I didn't really watch too much anime this year. But that didn't stop me from coming to club the next year.

Member in 2003-2004
My last year at Cal Poly was spent as a simple member. I'll write more about this later.

What others say
<pre>
Ah Ben, our agent in Japan. He was pres for 2000, and 2k1 (and treasurer
before that I believe). Ben was pres during the time club began to "evolve"
into what I considder it's greatest period.

Pumpkins
My favorite part of Halloween was the pumpkin carving contest. I learned how to use the Pumpkin Masters Carving kit with my parents a long long time ago, and my skills in Graphic Communications helpped a lot here. The first Halloween I made a picture of Rishu from Mammotte Shugogetten. Man she was cute.

In 2003 I made these pumpkins:

For the reccord, I designed Rakka, but Mike Whipped did all the messy carving work for me. Nadia is definitly my most favorite pumpkin I have ever done!

Later on I'm thinking of writing a pumpkin making guide for everyone! :)
