So what kind of anime do you guys actually watch?

So I'm an incoming transfer student to Poly, and anime is one of my favorite hobbies, and it would be cool to socialize with those who also like it. However, I've often gotten the impression from other friends who like anime that anime clubs at colleges are more into dubs, older DVD releases, and are Naruto fanboys. Almost all of the anime I watch has been released in the past 3-5 years, it's pure fansubs, and it's definitely not Naruto. Do you think it's worth it for me to check you guys out? I'd like to join a "fun" club; I'm just trying to decide if Minna no Anime is the one.

Well first things first, a general rule is that we don't watch anything that has been on TV [anything on adult swim or Cartoon Network etc...].
Another rule is that we only show licensed anime [usually]. This rule is in place mainly because of legal issues. We can't show fansubs officially because that would be considered pirating and we can get in trouble that way. We do have "fansub of the week" which is the first episode of a fansub of this seasons anime. Otherwise we try to balance out the schedule with things from every genre. We do show some R2s, which are in-house fansubbed.
Also, if you can't tell already, we only show subs. =D
Here is last year's show list from the Wiki as an example:
2009-10
* Kamichu!
* Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu
* Emma
* Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team
* FLAG
* Sousei no Aquarion
* Yakitate! Japan
* Time of Eve
* Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage
* Sengoku Basara
* Darker than BLACK
* Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad
* Baccano!
* Eden of the East

Well, a lot of those are actually supposed to be very good shows. Only actually seen a couple (Fumoffu is a favorite, BTW). But assuming you guys have the DVD's, are you watching it with subs or dubs?
And you guys might *talk* about a fansub even if you don't actually show it in-house? That might not be so bad.

Most of the dvd's come from members private collections and we watch everything subbed.

Oh, didn't see your line "we only show subs."

Definitely gonna check you out then.
So just stop by your booth at the club showcase and see what's up?

Sounds great, if you want you could register an account on the forum to chat with some current and former members.

Seems I got beaten to the punch, but I'd like to expand on that.
*Yes, we only watch subs. Generally the majority of us cringe at the sound of English Dubs.
*We only watch licensed shows on Official American-released DVDs
*The one exception is when we buy very expensive R2s to really good shows and Live Sub them ourselves. Examples of this from last year include Yakitate! Japan, Sengoku Basara, and Eden of the East. For these, we do buy the Japanese R2's, rip them and live sub them ourselves, so we are still supporting the official market.
*We also highly discourage anything that's been shown on American Live broadcast (Cartoon Network and such which includes but is not limited to the infamous big 3)
EDIT(as apparently i'm a slower poster than i thought i was): We'd love to see you at the showcase and in club!

All of the shows on our regular schedule are
only shown subtitled. Outside of our normal schedule (dinner break, open programming nights, after hours, summer quarter
, officers not knowing how to navigate a DVD menu) there are sometimes
very limited exceptions to this rule for pure comedic value.
As for talking... register as a user and look in the General Anime/Manga forum... there are threads about the current Japanese season in there right now.
Edit: Damn, everyone beat me. Didn't think I was being
that slow at writing this post...

Plenty of members talk about unlicensed anime and watch it. However, since Minna no Anime is affiliated with Cal Poly which is a school and subject to legal action [at least moreso than individuals], the official club stance is that we are not allowed to show it unless if we own it [DVD/Blu-ray]. In the case of an R2, we must use in-house fansubs. This is completely for legal reasons as we want to support companies that release anime here, and we don't want to get in trouble with said companies.
Also please do join us at the booth during club showcase and in the forum. We have some things planned afterwards so new people can get to know some of the older members in club.
Edit: Not to get sidetracked but did we show Time of Eve last year? I don't remember seeing that...

Showed it during dinner break around the end of winter quarter (I think)
